696 B: Study Abroad Barcelona

Sports and Culture

During my study abroad experience in Barcelona, I explored how sport is deeply connected to cultural identity, particularly through the relationship between FC Barcelona and Catalan pride.

In Barcelona, sport extends beyond competition; it serves as a powerful expression of regional identity. FC Barcelona has long been viewed as a symbol of Catalan culture, history, and political identity, representing more than just a football club.

This highlights how sport can be a vessel for broader social and cultural movements and reinforce a sense of belonging within a community.

While in Barcelona, I also observed key differences in athlete development pathways compared to the United States. In Spain, the pipeline to professional sport is centered around club systems and academies, where athletes are identified and developed at a young age.

This contrasts with the U.S. model, which often relies on collegiate athletics as a primary pathway to professional sport. These structural differences reflect broader cultural values surrounding education, sport specialization, and professional development

My academic work also explored the influence of culture on sport competition, particularly through a presentation on Carlos Alcaraz. I learned that Spain's tradition of red clay courts has shaped a style of tennis characterized by long, physically demanding rallies. This is one example of how environmental and cultural factors influence not only who participates in sport, but also how the game itself is played.

Overall, this study abroad helped me gain a deeper understanding of how sport reflects cultural identity, values, and societal structures.
